Why is my laptop so hot?
If you only have 10 minutes before it shuts off, then I suspect you are experiencing a hardware problem. Most likely the internal cooling fan on your computer is not running.

If you're comfortable disassembling a laptop, then you can try to repair it yourself, but I highly recommend taking it to a professional repair facility.

In the meantime, if you need to use it for a few minutes longer than 10 minutes, a drastic measures workaround would be to put the hose of a vacuum cleaner up to the air holes where the fan normally blows out. This will pull cool air through the laptop and may give you enough time to burn a quick CD or make a backup of your computer. Note: I wouldn't do this EXCEPT in extreme cases. A vacuum cleaner will pull more air than your laptop was originally designed to expel. In other words, it can damage your laptop. Assess your need to use the laptop against the time you have to wait before getting it repaired.
Reply:check it out with speedfan
Reply:yep.. put it on a desk

it's a laptop.. doesn't mean u put it on your lap....

your probably covering vents so no cold air can get in or hot air go out.

if your not covering the vents .. perhaps the fans not working right and needs to be fixed.
Reply:you use it too much
Reply:if this is happening while it is plugged in, then your computer is F#$ked, or the fan is runing the other way...

if on battery then your battery is bad.. change it..

as for the heat... can you provide the make fo the laptop (brand),, if Dell then yeah its hot...

*PS when you said "hot" i was thinking of style (my sexy toshiba)
Reply:Make sure you are not covering up the fan and/or vents. Also you can get a laptop tray with a built in fan to help cool it further. I believe I saw them at CompUSA before they closed here...you could always check their website.
Reply:maybe the fan is clogged?? If so just take it to a computer place because it is fixable :]]
Reply:Probably your fan is not working or not efficient enough. Get it checked rapidly, as continuously suffering this kind of shutdown may damage the machine.
