How do you choose your pofession when you do well at everything?

That sounds cockier than I meant for it to, but it is still my question. I am one of those lucky people that does well at whatever I put my mind to. And because of this I can't figure out what I want to do for a career!

I know what I don't want. I don't want a cubicle desk. I have to be active, I can't sit in a closed space for 8 hours a day, i'd go nuts.

I like statistics. I do want leadership responsibility but on my terms. I have experience in journalism, PR, teaching, military and construction. Each of those had things I enjoyed and things I detested. Where does one go to find where they fit?

How do you choose your pofession when you do well at everything?
Go to carreer counseling...OR...

Sounds like you would be better off being your "own" boss...a real estate agent would be perfect for you....each of your experiences (PR and construction especially) would serve you well...you would not be confined to an office, you are basically your own boss, and maybe would make a fine broker-in-charge (with the leadership skills you possess), plus it is highly challenging, never the same each day, and allows you to hone your negotiating skills....
Reply:Choose a profession that is challenging as well as enjoyable. Every profession will have areas that are not too pleasant however at the end of the day, it is by being successful at problem solving that we feel fulfilled.
Reply:"Oh lord it's hard to be humble when you're the best in every way"

Reply:I hate to be the one to tell you this - but leadership responsibilities don't come on your terms. When you're in a leadership role, you have to deal with whatever comes up, and with other people's strengths and weaknesses - using their strengths, and minimizing the effect of their weaknesses.

If you know you don't want to be confined to an office or cube, have you considered something like sales?
Reply:Go into the Army. They have 150 career fields to try ranging from musician to medical to paratrooper. And they pay well with great benefits to include free college up to a PHD.

Plus you will have Army to put on your resume which is great tool for getting your foot in the door in every major industry.
Reply:I don't really know what to tell you.

Even later in life after college many people don't really know what they want to do.

I am like that. I float around doing this and that.

Just trying to do a job.

I picked my career because I am mechanically inclined. I took apart a radio, but I couldn't figure out the problem was.

I was also an artist. I had a talent for Art. I started taking Architectual drafting and when computers were introduced, they did in 5 minutes what took me a week.

I quickly changed fields to electronics. So, I went to school to figure it out how radios work. How to design radios and TV's, etc. Well, at least now I know how a radio works, along with TV's internet and computers.

I float around alot, much like you.

Sometimes it is good, sometimes it is bad.

I know a little bit about everything and not a whole lot about anything.

I think perhaps if you find a problem you really detest, you can try to fix it. That way, you can make life better for everybody.

Other than that, you are like everybody else. Just looking for a 9 to 5.
Reply:I too had the same problem.. I did well at every job I was at, but was left with an empty feeling. I too wanted a job that I was able to make a decent living, be my own boss, yet still be challenged. I choose Real Estate Appraisal...True at first the job does not just happen, it is hard work to get your foot in the door of this real estate industry, but once you do, it is well worth it. I work my own hours, I see many different homes, have many different experiences with All types of people, and I am constantly learning new laws, regulations, and so much more, the possibilities are endless. I would say good luck in what ever you choose, as your ultimate goal should be happiness!
