Where does the name "Lucky Strike" come from?

I've heard a few theories and for some reason (mainly boredom) it's been driving me nuts.

Where does the name "Lucky Strike" come from?
The term "lucky strike" is a mining term. The American Tobacco Company came up with the brand "Lucky Strike" in 1871. By this time, gold had been discovered in California at Sutter's Mill, in the Black Hills of South Dakota (1868), and silver had been discovered in Colorado in 1859 (Comstock Lode).
Reply:Wild guess: must have been associated with gold-mining most likely in San Francisco
Reply:It is or was a brand of cigarettes
Reply:lucky strike could be referring to when they had the gold strikes they would call them lucky strikes %26amp; some even named their mines lucky strike or it could refer to the cigarates also when the bombers dropped bombs they call them lucky strikes also. So its hard to say which lucky strike you are referring too
